Scriptural Decree?

November 3, 2012

I have seen all kinds of self-help books that use scripts that a person can say to strengthen what a person believes. The more senses we use to engage in changing a belief, the more we reinforce the new belief. For example, if we write something and say the same thing aloud, the thought is said to “carry more weight” – to be reinforced. The more often we say something, the more it is reinforced. We know that this is true, for schools use this model often for teaching.

In my last post, I talked about the power of praying scripture. If we write, say aloud, and pray a scripture and do it often, I believe we can enhance the speed in which we change a belief. It gets us aligned with God’s will and works with our human brains as well.

This leads me to the subject of Decrees. Dictionary.com defines a decree this way:
1. a formal and authoritative order, especially one having the force of law: a presidential decree.
2. Law . a judicial decision or order.
3. Theology . one of the eternal purposes of God, by which events are foreordained.

I love the words authoritative, force of law, decision, eternal purposes of God and foreordained.

Now lets look at the Bible.

Job 22:21

21“Yield now and be at peace with Him;
Thereby good will come to you.
22“Please receive instruction from His mouth
And establish His words in your heart.
23“If you return to the Almighty, you will be restored;
If you remove unrighteousness far from your tent,
26“For then you will delight in the Almighty
And lift up your face to God.
27“You will pray to Him, and He will hear you;
And you will pay your vows.
28“You will also decree a thing, and it will be established for you;
And light will shine on your ways.

Through the scripture God is instructing us to yield to Him, receive instruction, establish it in our hearts, remove unrighteousness from our lives and pray to Him. Then we get to verse 28 which says that if we decree a thing, it will be established for us!

So let’s do what it says, lets yield to Him, receive His instruction, get it into our hearts and then confess any unrighteousness. Do not forget the repentance part of this, for the Bible clearly says that THEN He will hear our prayers and our decrees will be established and light will shine on our ways.

So decreeing is different then just saying something or even praying something. It is standing on scripture with authority, lawful force and decisiveness for the foreordained purposes of God. We know optimal health is in God’s will, for by His stripes we have been healed (Isaiah 53:5) and he came to heal the brokenhearted (Psalm 147:3). Therefore, we can and ought to make decrees about our health for optimal health!
